Moving On With Life
Well, I’ve come to a crossroads and some major decision making. I’ve thought I would never hear myself say this…(at least 2 years ago), but I’ve decided to go back to school…
One of the things I’ve been faced with is what to do with my future. I’ve received many blessings in my life, and one of them is a well-defined possible career path if I decide to keep working on it. It’s strange sometimes how a few events in your life can change it forever. A man I revere to be a modern-day prophet of God, Gordon B. Hinckley, gave a talk to people my age about what the future holds for us if we walk in correct paths. It has been an inspiration to say the least. In it, he gives an allegory of a farm gate. Usually gates of this type are very long and swing very widely. He speaks of the fact that very little movement on the hinge causes the very end to move substantially. How so it is with our lives. Our little choices we make sometimes have dramatic and sometimes profound consequences.
At any rate, I’ve decided to stay in Arizona for the time being. I’m about to embark on a Master’s program at ASU in Educational Technology, which is the study of how technology affects our learning and lives. Those who know me best, will understand that I have a profound view on life and an extreme curiosity on how human beings learn and grow. I’m also a technologist by trade (computer nerd for those who really care), and an educator when I wear that hat. (I love to teach and have done so in the past).
It was a hard decision to make, but the funny thing is that once I made it, things started falling into place. I was considering an MBA program out of state, but they didn’t want me, apparently. However, a master’s study of business is really about how to help organizations make more money, which is a valuable and very honorable skill. When I got down to it though, I realized that I could have a more profound effect on people’s lives if I can help them to learn. I involved God in my decision, and I believe He helped me know that this is my calling in life–to assist (if I can, and if they will let me) people in improving their lives through growth and learning. The best part of it all is that the growth and learning is also mutual and beneficial to me in that way.
Well, there you have it. I really hope to hone my teaching and technology skills through this endeavor. I’ll let everyone know how it all turns out.
